2nd Ford local approves concessions

Hourly workers at two more Ford Motor Co. plants have approved contract concessions designed to help the struggling automaker survive, providing a strong indication that the modifications will be adopted.

A union official said Monday that 78 percent of workers who voted at United Auto Workers Local 900 in Wayne, Mich., approved the deal, which would freeze wages and cuts cash bonuses. The local represents about 3,900 employees at Ford's Michigan Truck and Wayne Assembly factories.

The official did not want to be identified because the full UAW vote total has not been released. Voting is to be completed by March 9.

The official said 83 percent of production workers at the Wayne factories voted to ratify the contract, while 52 percent of skilled-trade workers supported the changes.

The Wayne Assembly plant makes the Ford Focus small car, while Michigan Truck stopped making large sport utility vehicles in November and is being retooled to make small cars.

UAW members at Ford's Sterling Axle plant, represented by Local 228, approved the contract Saturday, and workers at an axle plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., approved the changes Sunday, according to UAW Vice President Bob King.

The Dearborn-based automaker's agreement with the UAW also eliminates the "jobs bank" program that paid laid-off workers most of their salary, and it allows payments to a union-run trust for retiree health care to be paid in stock.
