Chrysler Recalls 2009 Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan Minivans

Chrysler is recalling 13,350 Town & Country and minivans because uncapped connectors for the blind-spot detection system could overheat and potentially cause a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The federal watchdog emphasizes that the recall includes minivans that are not equipped with the blind-spot detection system.

In documentation filed with the federal government, Chrysler says that to reduce the number of build combinations at the factory, some minivans received wire harnesses with the blind-spot detection system connector 'even though they do not have the feature.... This unused connector was not capped,' say the documents.

'Unused electrical connectors for the blind-spot detection system may become corroded and could short-circuit, which can cause a variety of conditions,' said NHTSA in its recall summary of the problem. 'If the fuse for this circuit does not blow, the connectors could overheat and potentially catch fire.'

The short-circuited connectors could affect operation of the compass display, rear heater/air-conditioner, door courtesy lamps and integral flashlight.

Chrysler said it is unaware of any injuries or fatalities related to the recall. It said it has received 29 reports of inoperative compass displays and seven conditions of melted connectors. 'In two of these reports, evidence indicates the presence of localized flames at the connector,' according to recall documents.

Chrysler dealers will seal the power circuit at the connector and replace the fuse for the circuit if necessary. The recall is expected to begin sometime in February. Owners can contact Chrysler at (800) 853-1403.
