Announced: 2009 Ford Shelby GT R Model

Shelby Automobiles and Ford Racing are collaborating on yet another limited-edition Mustang. The 2009 Ford Shelby GT R Model commemorates the 1965 SCCA championship of Jerry Titus in a Shelby Mustang GT350R. Based on the current-generation Mustang Shelby GT500, the R Model will be built in a limited run of only 37 copies, priced at $134,995 each.

The new Jerry Titus Edition R Model will be painted white with silver stripes. It is not street-legal, but it should be a terror on the track with its race-ready chassis and a 550-horsepower supercharged 4.6-liter V8.

Each car will feature a six-speed manual gearbox with GT500 clutch and Ford Racing short-throw shifter, Shelby performance side exhaust system, upgraded cooling system with differential and transmission coolers, racing brakes with front cooling ducts, 18-inch Shelby wheels with racing tires, a Grand Am-spec roll cage and a carbon-fiber rear wing and carbon fiber splitter.

In the Shelby Automobiles press release, founder and performance legend Carroll Shelby notes, 'In 1965, my team built 37 small-block R Model race-only versions of the Shelby GT350 Mustang that kicked tails on circuits worldwide.' The new R Model, Shelby adds, will be 'lots of fun to drive and ready to rip up the pavement right out of the box.'
