2009 Detroit Auto Show: Dodge Challenger R/T Classic Offers Throwback Style

The Dodge Challenger was designed using the 1970s' iconic coupe for inspiration, but at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, the retro muscle car took another step back toward the past with the unveiling of the special-edition Challenger R/T Classic.

The R/T Classic will feature script 'Challenger' badges on the fenders and double racing stripes on the side of the car. The Heritage wheels also pay tribute to the original Challenger, but at 20 inches are significantly larger than what was offered in the 1970s. Dodge's brochure for the 2009 Challenger says the car will be sold exclusively in B5 Blue, a color offered on the original Challenger, but the car displayed at the Detroit auto show wore Hemi Orange. Chrysler is expected to release more details on the car later this week.

The Classic is the only R/T model to have a hood with functional scoops on it. Like other R/T models, the Classic will be powered by the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 producing 376 horsepower with a six-speed manual transmission or 372 hp with a five-speed automatic. The Challenger R/T Classic will go on sale later this year.
