BorgWarner to partner with Chinese company

Auburn Hills-based BorgWarner today announced a joint venture with China Automobile Development United Investment Co. Ltd. to produce dual clutch transmission modules, adding to the growing automatic transmission market in China, starting in 2011.

The joint venture, known as BorgWarner United Transmission Systems Co. Ltd., will be located in Dalian, China. BorgWarner will hold a 66 percent stake.

China Automobile is owned by 12 Chinese automakers such as FAW, SAIC, Brilliance and Polarsun.

"By leading the dual clutch transmission expansion into the Chinese marketplace, this joint venture will establish BorgWarner's DualTronic technology as the preferred automatic transmission solution in China," said Tim Manganello, BorgWarner Chairman and CEO, in a news release.

The DualTronic technology, based on a manual transmission setup, is attractive in China where OEMs already have a manual transmission infrastructure.
