Ford Fusion Hybrid Wins Midsize Fuel-Efficiency Crown at 41 MPG
DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford's Fusion Hybrid has bragging rights over the Toyota Camry Hybrid in the fuel-efficiency sweepstakes. The Ford was certified in testing at 41 miles per gallon in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. The Camry Hybrid is listed by Toyota at 33 mpg in city driving and 34 mpg combined, and even the smaller Honda Civic Hybrid gets 1 less mile per gallon in city driving than the new Ford.Ford completed the certification testing at its Allen Park, Michigan, laboratories this week, the company said. Ford's Fusion Hybrid can travel more than 700 miles on one tank of gas and can reach 47 mph in pure electric mode — thanks to a newly developed nickel-metal hydride battery that Ford says is smaller, lighter and more powerful than the previous Ford hybrid system, as well as a new regenerative braking system. The Fusion Hybrid also has a new Duratec 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 155 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque with a continuously variable transmission. The car goes on sale in the spring.Inside Line says: Those are some impressive numbers. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
