ORANGE COUNTY, California — A key question for Steve Saleen's people on Monday was whether his 2010 Signature Series SMS 460 Mustang will be shown in January at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. The answer is no, but Saleen wanted to be at the head of the pack anyway when it came to announcing high-performance modifications on the 2010 Ford Mustang.No word yet on the SMS 460 Mustang pricing, volume predictions or shipping schedule, according to Axel E. Catton, spokesman for SMS, Steve Saleen's new company. Manufacturing is expected to kick off in the second quarter of 2009. There's not even an official image, just a partial rendering of a red Mustang, described as a 'sneak preview.' One design cue appears to be the SMS Red Butterfly Induction hood.Saleen said his SMS 460 Mustangs are based on the 2010 Ford Mustang GT platform. They will feature an SMS supercharged 4.6-liter engine with output ratings from 475 to 650 horsepower. 'Look for all-new and upgraded drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics, tires, wheels and interior,' the company said in a statement.SMS also noted that the SMS 570 Dodge Challenger and the SMS 570X Dodge Challenger will begin shipping in January.Inside Line says: It's clear that Steve Saleen doesn't want to be upstaged by his competitors.
