2008 Bologna Auto Show: Volkswagen Scirocco Studie R

BOLOGNA, Italy — Volkswagen's latest design study shown at the 2008 Bologna Auto Show hints at a factory performance model of the Scirocco hatchback. The Volkswagen Scirocco Studie R may be a preview of the Scirocco R20T rumored to hit Europe in 2009.The concept receives a 70-horsepower increase for the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, which now delivers 266 hp. That power is transferred to the ground through the front wheels and a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The Studie R rides on a racing-derived suspension and 19-inch five-spoke wheels. Brakes have been upgraded with four-piston calipers. The Studie R draws inspiration from the Scirocco GT24 that raced in the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race with its new front fascia and rear bumper with diffuser. The Studie R also features twin oval exhaust pipes and a rear spoiler, and a front splitter is said to reduce lift. For the Bologna show, the concept has an Italian flag motif painted on the doors along with the words 'Bologna 08,' while the left mirror is painted red and the right is covered in green. Inside, the Recaro seats are upholstered in black and white leather with Italian-flag inspired accents that also appear on the steering wheel, armrest, gear knob and floor mats.Inside Line says: A 70-hp increase will give European tuners even more reason to love the Scirocco. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent
