2008 Los Angeles Auto Show: Kia's Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Borrego

LOS ANGELES — Korean automaker Kia is expected to garner more than the usual share of attention at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show when it shows a fuel-cell-powered version of the Borrego SUV alongside the new Soul hatchback.Kia's Borrego FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) carries the third-generation version of Kia's fuel cell stack as well as a new lithium-ion polymer battery. An important feature of the new fuel cell, Kia has said, is that it can operate well under cold temperature conditions and has more power and efficiency than previous versions. The Borrego FCEV reportedly makes 154 horsepower and can travel up to 426 miles thanks to three onboard hydrogen tanks and an electric motor. The 2009 Kia Borrego made its debut last January at the Detroit auto show. A fleet of FCEV versions is reportedly set to undergo real-world testing in 2010.Inside Line says: Another reason to keep an eye on this increasingly interesting automaker. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
