2008 SEMA Show: Ford Flex Lives Up to Name With Multiple Tricked-Out Versions

DEARBORN, Michigan — The name 'Flex' was prescient. Ford's new crossover gets modified, tarted up and reinterpreted in more than a dozen different ways for the 2008 SEMA Show in Las Vegas this week.Flex marketing manager Kate Pearce calls the new model's style 'polarizing' — in a good way, of course — and notes that customers can already get the Flex personalized both in color and feature choices and in Ford Custom Accessories products available through Ford dealers.Among the tuners personalizing Flexes for SEMA is Mobsteel of Brighton, Michigan, with an 'aggressive' and 'mean-looking' interpretation that includes redesigned front and rear fascias, matte black roof and grille, a blacked-out interior and a set of 24-inch wheels with super-low-profile Pirelli P Zero Nero tires. The Mobsteel Flex's doors also open from the center to the side and there's a Magnaflow Performance cat-back exhaust and Mobsteel adjustable rear air ride for the right sound and look. The 3dCarbon Flex Euro Series has a 10-piece body kit including front airdam, four-piece side skirts, rear lower skirt and upper roof spoiler. There are also a carbon fiber roof and Katzkin leather interior, custom House of Kolor paint job and 24-inch wheels with super-low-profile rims. The company says it's going for a sleeker and more citified look.Catalyst Industrial Marking's take on the Flex involves a heavy-duty graphics job using Raceskinz composite graphics, acres of brushed metal trim inside and out, and a LIIV wireless Internet entertainment system that includes games, movies and music.Kal Koncepts/Air Syndicate went for an 'urban/hip hop' feel for the Flex. The major feature is a Sony Xplod sound system with DJ station in back, complete with two turntables and a mixer in 'battle style' set up by DJ Alex G of 'Violator All Star DJs,' the company said. Mural graphics and 22-inch Dub wheels complete the image.Galpin Auto Sports' Flex is painted in Butterscotch Orange with a White Pearl roof. Custom front fascia and monochromatic grille give the exterior a 'daring but subtle' style, and inside there are white leather Katzkin seats with butterscotch accents. There's also a custom JL audio system.CGS Motorsports' 'Reflex' Flex has one-off custom billet wheels in a 22-inch size, a custom body kit with two-tone paint scheme, custom leather interior and modified air intake and exhaust. The Rick Bottom Designs Flex has an 11-piece body kit, chrome moldings and grilles, 22-inch wheels and tires and a second-row refrigerator. There's also a quartet of Flexes modified in conjunction with auto-buff publications: one each for Hot Rod, Automobile magazine, Heavy Hitters magazine and Motor Trend.Inside Line says: The already edgy-looking Flex gets Flexed in a multitude of interesting ways. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
