Edmunds Forecasts 29 Percent Drop in October Car Sales

SANTA MONICA, California — New vehicle sales in October are expected to drop 28.9 percent from a year earlier, to 872,000 units — the lowest volume since January 1992 — according to the latest forecast by Edmunds.com.Projected losses range from 18.7 percent for Toyota to 42.9 percent for General Motors. Jesse Toprak, executive director of industry analysis for Edmunds.com, said, 'If the election and other variables don't have a significant impact on auto sales through December, we are looking at an annual total of about 13.6 million units.'Inside Line says: Industry watchers see not the faintest sign of an uptick on the horizon. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
