Japan: Modellista Toyota iQ

TOKYO — Toyota's ultracompact iQ has just launched in Tokyo and is already on its way to becoming one of the city's most happening fashion accessories. Even better, in the hands of Toyota offshoot Modellista, the new model has been 'dressed up' in Version Maxi and Version Mixture variants. The tiny 1.0-liter iQ has the looks and cool eco image to turn many heads in this fast-moving automotive capital. Japan also loves the buzz of anything new, hot, high-tech and small, and the iQ clearly delivers on all fronts. The Modellista Version Maxi and Version Mixture are, at heart, quick, simple cosmetic updates to rev up the looks of the little iQ. The Version Maxi has a choice of three colors to customize the front air vent and also adds small side and rear lower skirts and a center muffler. You can buy it all as one package for around the equivalent of $4,000, or in separate parts. The more garish Version Mixture includes orange mirrors, door and rear window flashing and a front vent. It's also a lot easier on the wallet at around the equivalent of $720. The Modellista catalog also lists lowered coil springs and a set of 16-inch alloy wheels for the equivalent of a rather pricey $1,800.The iQ itself hits the market in Japan for around $13,860-$15,850. Inside Line says: Very small and very nicely dressed-up city cars from Toyota. — Peter Nunn, Correspondent
