Silver Continues To Win Automotive Popularity Contest
TROY, Michigan — Silver appears to be the safest choice for a vehicle's color, since that shade once again has come out on top of PPG Industries' annual automotive color popularity survey. The least popular color is green, according to the results, which were released on Wednesday.Further delving into the psychology of vehicle color choices, the 2008 Old Farmer's Almanac says silver cars indicate 'someone who's cool, calm and slightly aloof.' The almanac credits a survey of 130,000 insurance claims processed by the Churchill Company in Britain for that nugget of insight. It also noted that 'green cars are often the choice of people with hysterical tendencies.' And black cars 'denote an aggressive personality or someone who's an outsider or rebel.'PPG Industries said black, the third most popular color choice behind silver and white, is gaining in popularity. Black was up two percentage points from the 2007 survey. In an interesting footnote to its color survey, PPG Industries said it has 'developed more than 130 color concepts for automakers' consideration for the 2011-'12 model years.' They include 'Lights Out,' a 'very deep, dark blue with the added sparkle of glass flake,' 'Bling,' which is described as a 'pale gold with a subtle color change,' and 'Visionary Violet,' which is said to be influenced by the 'youth fashion market.' Your future vehicle might also be adorned with 'Split & Peel,' a 'fresh pale-banana yellow with a creamy look.'PPG Industries also predicts that blue will be a 'new major color area' in the coming years. It was the favorite color selected by 1,200 potential car buyers polled at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.Inside Line says: 'Green' is popular for vehicles in every way but color, say the experts. But you can't go wrong with silver. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
