Citroën Mulls Whether To Build Production Version of Quirky C-Cactus Concept

PARIS — In the race to be the greenest automaker, Citroën on Wednesday confirmed it is considering building a production version of its C-Cactus Concept, the ultra-green car that strips away such 'nonessential' features as the dashboard. The French automaker also said the range of power plant options for the C-Cactus includes a '100 percent electric model.'Citroën said an electric version of the C-Cactus would have a top speed of 70 mph with a range of 100 miles. Other power plant options include a 1.0-liter gas engine and a Hymotion2 diesel-electric hybrid. When the C-Cactus debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, it was variously described as 'edgy' and 'ugly.' The most unusual feature is the elimination of a traditional dashboard. Instead, most of the functions, including the climate control, navigation and audio systems, are mounted on the center console and the steering wheel hub. The ignition key also plugs into the steering wheel hub.The concept made generous use of recycled or recyclable materials, including cork, felt and recycled leather. In its update on the C-Cactus, Citroën said its simplified design significantly reduces 'the number of components, leading to a reduction in weight, cost and the impact on the environment.'Inside Line says: It's bound to be one of the most radical electric vehicles on the planet, if Citroën ever decides to build it. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
