For Japan Only: Mazda AZ-Wagon Redesigned

TOKYO — Mazda has redesigned its micromini AZ-Wagon in Japan for the first time in five years, adding such new high-tech options as push-button start and a continuously variable transmission with seven-speed-manual mode and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Prices range from $8,300 to $15,900.The new AZ-Wagon, which goes on sale this month in the home market, retains its traditional boxy styling. Mazda offers a wide range of powertrain choices, including turbocharged and normally aspirated DOHC engines, in both front-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations. The most frugal variant returns an average of 55 mpg on Japan's 10-15-mode test cycle. The top-of-the-line AZ-Wagon Custom Style features an aero body kit and alloy wheels, as well as a glossy black center panel and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. What this means to you: A box by any other name is still a box. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
