With Dodge Ram Sales in the Tank, Chrysler Announces October Incentive Strategy

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — With sales of such products as the Jeep Compass, Dodge Ram and Dodge Dakota drying up, Chrysler announced an October incentive strategy that it says offers 'the best deals of the year' on 2008 models. The incentive strategy is designed to get rid of slow-moving 2008 Dodge Ram pickups, even as the redesigned '09 model begins rolling into dealer showrooms.'The incentive plan will focus on aggressive cash positions and discounted APR financing that drive lower monthly payments,' Chrysler said in a statement on Wednesday. 'For example, on the remaining inventory of the 2008-model-year Dodge Ram, there are total manufacturer discounts up to $6,000 or zero-percent APR financing for 72 months with $1,000 cash back.'Chrysler said returning lease customers will get a Lease Loyalty allowance of up to $750 toward a new retail purchase. If the consumer is able to get a lease through an independent financial institution, Chrysler will offer bonus cash of up to $2,000 on select 2008 models.Chrysler's September 2008 sales were down 33 percent from the same period a year ago. Dodge Ram sales declined 31 percent in that period, from 30,100 in September 2007 to 20,812 in September 2008. Jeep Compass was down 65 percent, Dodge Durango down 78 percent and Dodge Dakota down 85 percent. The Dodge Viper stood out as a bright spot, with Chrysler reporting a sales increase of 258 percent in September versus a year ago, although the actual numbers are relatively modest. Dodge sold 86 Vipers in September 2008 compared with 24 the previous year. Chrysler earlier announced that it is looking for a buyer for the Viper. What this means to you: Some good deals to be had on Chrysler products you apparently don't want. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
