GM Drops Small MPV From U.S. Plan

DETROIT — The new Chevrolet Orlando won't be officially unveiled until the 2008 Paris Auto Show in early October, but General Motors reportedly has already scratched the compact MPV from its North American roster.GM had planned to build a version of the Orlando next year at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant, according to internal planning documents. Code-named MPV7, the five-door, seven-passenger vehicle is based on GM's Delta 2 global compact platform, which also underpins such products as the new Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Volt.According to the Wall Street Journal, GM has now suspended plans to build the Orlando in the U.S. and instead will bring another unspecified small car to the States from Asia. The paper quoted sources from GM and the UAW confirming the cancellation of the Orlando.Sources tell Inside Line that the Hamtramck plant is still slated to build the Volt beginning in 2010 and is also in line to build a new midsize Chevrolet, possibly a replacement for the Malibu based on the global Epsilon 2 architecture, beginning in 2012.In Europe and other markets, a companion to the Orlando will replace the Opel Zafira. GM may also market the Orlando under the Chevrolet brand name in Europe and Asia. What this means to you: This is at least the second or third time that GM at the last minute has scrapped plans to bring a version of the Zafira mini-MPV to North America. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
