Chevrolet Volt Expected To Be Centerpiece of GM's 100th-Anniversary Celebration

DETROIT — The production version of the high-mileage battery-powered Chevrolet Volt, perhaps the most significant car in the history of General Motors, is expected to make its debut on Tuesday. General Motors will mark its 100th anniversary on September 16 and is pinning much of its future on the success of the electric Volt.GM spokesmen contacted by Inside Line on Monday would not confirm whether the Volt will indeed make its highly anticipated debut this week. But the buzz in Detroit is that the Volt will be the heart of the automaker's celebration. Chevrolet's Volt media Web site did not provide any hints about the production Volt premiere on Monday. Thus far, the automaker has released only teaser images of parts of the production Volt, which is due for a rollout in late 2010.The national media is poised to pounce if the Chevrolet Volt fails to win the hearts of the buying public. 'If it fails, it could drag GM, and perhaps the entire struggling American auto industry, even farther behind Asian competitors,' warned The New York Times on Sunday. The Wall Street Journal on Monday said: 'GM knows the dangers of disappointing avid fans' in an update of the Volt. The fear seems to be centered on the failure of GM's EV-1, which tarnished the automaker's image in the alt-fuel vehicle arena. In August, GM Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said that the Volt will likely cost in the mid-to-high-$30,000 range. What this means to you: You should get a good hard look at the Chevrolet Volt sometime this week. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
