Toyota to have hybrid in each of its product lines by 2020

Advanced powertrain program manager Justin Ward says that Toyota is really confident that it will have hybrid models in each of its product lines by 2020. The Japanese automaker, which has sold more than 1 million hybrids, estimated that it has saved 7 million tons of carbon dioxide.

Currently Toyota has three hybrid models in its lineup including the Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. It will reveal the next-generation Toyota Prius at that 2009 Detroit auto show followed by a plug-in version of the Prius in early 2011 that will be powered by lithium-ion batteries.

It was recently reported that Toyota will drop plans to produce the Supra and FJ Cruiser from its product plans and will concentrate on a hybrid version of the Venza crossover and Sienna minivan - both expected to arrive in 2012.

A dedicated Lexus hybrid model will also make its debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.
