See M*A*S*H-like ambulance
BIRMINGHAM -- Woodward Dream cruisers who strike the curb one too many times or suffer whiplash from a raucous burnout should keep an eye out for a vintage M*A*S*H-style ambulance parked along Woodward Avenue this year.
The vehicle, a 1953 Dodge Power Wagon, is on display outside Meadowbrook Urgent Care in Birmingham, where real doctors and nurses are available inside to help cruisers with nonlife-threatening medical emergencies.
The classic military Jeep, purchased by Yisroel Sigler, a registered nurse and vice president at Meadowbrook, is already getting plenty of attention from car admirers. Sigler bought the 7,500-pound vehicle on eBay for an undisclosed sum last month. It's black with the famous Red Cross on both sides.
"Being on Woodward, I thought what better place to get a vintage military ambulance to use for promotional events and driving," Sigler said of the Korean War-era truck.
Inside, the hulking vehicle can accommodate a stretcher and two workers but lacks any working medical technology or power steering. Moving the behemoth requires a strong-armed driver and a team of pushers.
Sigler hopes to have the ambulance outfitted with modern equipment for medical runs by next year's Dream Cruise.
"People stop by just to see it. We had one offer to buy it this morning. I love the vehicle. I'm going to make it my winter car," he said.
