Concours dreams that came true draw long lines of more dreamers

The 1935 Duesenberg SJ belonging to Harry Yeaggy of Cincinnati, Oh., still holds the record for the 5,000 kilometer run, averaging 137 mph, at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1935.

Restorer Chris Charlton of Classic Car Services in Oxford, Me., said the bright-yellow vehicle was built for Ab Jenkins specifically for the Salt Flats, where it set a record of 151 mph in a one-hour run and 135 mph in a 24-hour run back in the mid-1930s. The '35 Duesenberg SJ, a.k.a., 'Mormon Meteor,' has a 420-inch supercharged eight-cylinder engine, he said.

Thornhill, Ont., resident Paul Posesorski spent close to four years restoring his unusual 1970 Ferrari Dino 246 GTL, which was honored with a large, blue first-place ribbon at the Concours d'Elegance.

It was among the 'significant' Ferraris because there was only a six-cylinder engine mounted transversely under the hood. Developed by Enzo Ferrari's son Dino, and never fully accepted by the senior Ferrari for the unacceptably small engine (he demanded 12 cylinders), the car was never badged as a Ferrari, Posesorski said.

Some of the lesser Ferraris made their way into the North American market in the early 1970s, he said. There were only 357 built.

'I love certain cars for their uniqueness,' Posesorski said.

The Concours d'Elegance is an annual benefit for Meadow Brook Hall. It was grown over the years to include automotive art, automotive tours, vintage car races, cooking and wine-tasting events, seminars and fashion shows.
