Great Wall to appeal Peri defeat

GREAT Wall Motor Corp said yesterday it will appeal its defeat in an infringement lawsuit filed by Fiat in Italy.

A local court in Turin ruled in favor of Fiat last week, claiming Great Wall's Peri compact car looks similar to Fiat's popular Panda model. The move is expected to bar sales of Peri in European markets.

'We have been collecting evidence and are ready to appeal,' Shang Yugui, spokesman for Great Wall, said yesterday.

Shang said a group of experts organized by the court had identified that Peri didn't copy the patent of Fiat Panda before the ruling was unveiled.

'They are afraid the launch of Peri may hurt the sales of Fiat Panda,' Shang said. 'It's an unfair ruling and its only aim is to protect Italy's own auto industry.'

The court also ordered Great Wall to pay 15,000 euros (US$23,553). Another 50,000 euros will be charged on each model if the company continues to bring the car to Europe.

Peri is priced at 43,900 yuan to 55,800 yuan (US$6,429 to US$8,171) in China.

Great Wall, the nation's biggest manufacturer of sport utility vehicles, rolled out Peri earlier this year in its first step in exploring the buoyant passenger car market.

The car achieved sales of 3,000 units within three months, including 1,000 units sold in 20 overseas markets such as Russia, the Middle East and Egypt.

Great Wall said the Peri was developed with its own investment of more than 300 million yuan.

Italy's biggest car maker, Fiat, launched two lawsuits against Great Wall last year, one in China and one in Europe, claiming the body shape, roof, boot and doors were copies of its design.

Great Wall's defeat is the second of its kind for Chinese car makers within one month, with the copyright problem remaining the biggest obstacle in companies actively seeking sales abroad.

In June, BMW successfully stopped the Shuanghuan CEO SUV from being sold in Germany after a Munich court ruled it was too close to the design of the X5.
