UK: Berlingo and Partner go public
How does a van manufacturer replace a model that sold better last year than in its entire 11-year history? It doesn't, at least not if the van concerned is either the Citroën Berlingo or Peugeot Partner. Both will live on - as the Berlingo First and Partner Origin, when the new Berlingo and Partner reach a UK showroom near you in October, following their debut at the CV Show.
The old models will become basic entry-level kit to capitalise on their popularity - 3.6 million sold since 1996 - while not deterring potential buyers from the new models. Well that's the theory anyway.
Like every other self-respecting new van or car these days, the new models are bigger and heavier than their predecessors, sharing the PSA Platform 2 underpinnings with the Citroën C4 Picasso and Peugeot 308 ranges. And there's more, since both new vans will be available in two lengths. The wheelbase will remain the same for both models. The extra millimetres are obtained by stretching the rear overhang by 198mm.
This will give buyers a choice of two load area lengths - either 1,800mm or 2,050mm, which can be extended still further on the passenger side with the clever folding passenger seat. When folded, it offers a neat forward extension of the load floor on that side. Buyers can also choose the optional double passenger seat, offering seating for three up front, provided the centre seat passenger is short of leg and otherwise generally compact.
The tin twins offer cargo volumes of either 3.3m3 or 3.7m3 and will pack a gross payload of 635kg or 850kg for the standard length vans and 770kg for the longer models. With 1,229mm between the wheel arches there is space enough for a Europallet out back too.
Engines are transplanted from the current models, which means a 1,600cc 90bhp petrol or 1,600cc common-rail diesel offering either 75bhp or 90bhp, with or without particulate filter for the more powerful version.
As now there will be passenger versions too, but this time with a choice of seven seats in the longer models.
