3M Car Care offers DIY-ers at-home fuel system tune up kit

An engine, just like the human body, needs an entire fitness program to stay healthy. From the fuel you put it in, to how hard and frequently you run it, to how you take care of it, it's all about regular maintenance and a great diet to deliver great performance, power and efficiency. Now, 3M is offering an engine fitness program for do-it-yourselfers to help them keep their engines in top shop and trim fuel bills with trusted professional solutions.

"Whether you have a high-performance car that you like to drive aggressively, or an older car that just gets you to and from work, you have to put your engine on a fitness program to ensure it has the best possible fuel economy, horsepower and performance," says Duane Richardson, 3M AAD Technical Service Manager. "In today's economy, more and more consumers want to reduce their maintenance costs, prolong the lives of their vehicles and improve their gas mileage. An engine fitness program is the best way to accomplish this, and now do-it-yourselfers can do this at home at a third of the cost of a trip to the service center."

The new 3M Do-It-Yourself Fuel System Tune-Up Kit allows a DIYer with basic automotive skills to perform a professional fuel system cleaning at home. The kit cleans fuel injectors, intake manifold, intake valves, combustion chambers and throttle plate with the same trusted 3M products used by automotive professionals. Each kit contains 3M Complete Fuel System Cleaner, 3M Do-It-Yourself Intake System Cleaner, 3M Throttle Plate and Carb Cleaner, and an instructional DVD.

"This is like angioplasty for your car," adds Richardson. "It cleans out your car's system and maximizes the performance. It can reduce premature detonation that affects engine timing and reduces acceleration power.  It also can reduce emissions, which is particularly important in meeting emissions certificate requirements."

Compared to similar services at automotive service center, the 3M Do-It-Yourself Fuel System Tune-Up Kit costs one-third less at $45. And it requires no expensive hardware or machinery.

Using the 3M Do-It-Yourself Fuel System Tune-Up Kit is easy, and takes less than 45 minutes with basic hand tools. The simple steps include:

- With the engine off: Access your engine's throttle plate inside the throttle body. Secure the end of the 3M Do-it-Yourself Intake System Cleaner hose directly in front of the throttle plate. Set the Intake System Cleaner can in an upright position in a safe location away from electronic components and hot or moving parts. Turn the engine on. Increase RPMs 500 to 1,000 above base idle speed. Press firmly on the actuator to lock it on. The cleaner flows through the long delivery hose at a controlled rate and will take about 15 minutes to empty. Once empty, decrease the engine speed to idle and turn the engine Off. Remove the hose and empty can.
- With the engine off: Use 3M Throttle Plate and Carb Cleaner to spray clean any remaining deposits from the throttle plate and surrounding throttle body area. This product also will provide lubrication. Reassemble all under-hood parts.
- Pour the 3M Complete Fuel System Cleaner into your gas tank at the recommended dosage to clean all of the critical engine areas including the fuel injectors. Drive the vehicle for 10 to 15 minutes immediately after using the kit.
