Flex is an aftermarket dream

Flex marketing manager Kate Pearce noted that many accessories, including vinyl body graphics and Katzkin leather seat covers, are available through Ford dealerships and Ford Custom Accessories. Of more than a dozen customized Flexes at the SEMA Show, Ford found four so impressive the automaker presented the customizers with special achievement awards. Among them was a Flex done by Brighton-based Mobsteel, which gave the car a matte black roof and grille, black headliner and interior, remounted the rear doors on rear hinges and added black 24-inch wheels with super-low-profile Pirelli P Zero Nero tires. Mobsteel also did adjustable air suspension, redesigned the front and rear fascias, and rerouted the exhaust to a rear-center exit. 'Flex has a kind of retro-coolness to it,' said Mobsteel's Adam Genei. 'There are 100 different versions of it I'd like to make.' 3DCarbon of Newport Beach, Calif., went with a European theme for its customized Flex, which got a special 10-piece body kit (front air dam, side skirts, lower rear skirt and roof spoiler), as well as custom paint, Katzkin leather and Sony audio -- and again, a set of 24-inch wheels. Also getting special mention from Ford were Flexes done by CGS Motorsports and by Rick Bottom Designs. CGS called its Flex the 'Reflex' and made subtle styling changes, did a two-tone paint scheme, custom leather interior, custom 22-inch billet wheels and intake and exhaust modifications. Rick Bottom Designs opted for luxury with an 11-piece body kit with chrome moldings and grille, two-tone pearl paint, high-performance audio and even a refrigerator. Other modifications made to the Ford Flexes included: • Brushed metal components • Wireless Internet entertainment, along with a 1,000-watt amp and Sony 10-inch subwoofers (Catalyst Industrial Marketing) and 22-inch Dub spinners • A pair of turntables and Sony Xplod sound system (Kal Concepts/Air Syndicate Inc.) • Stunning White Pearl roof over Butterscotch Orange paint job (Galpin Auto Sports) • Moon disc wheels and Bonneville-style push bar front end (Hot Rod magazine) • Electronic massaging seats (Heavy Hitters).
