Unveiled: Caterham Superlight R300
CATERHAM, England — Caterham has resurrected the Superlight R300, with a new 175-horsepower Ford Duratec 2.0 engine under the hood.Tuned by Caterham, the four-cylinder engine propels the 1,135-pound car from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The Duratec engine, which makes 138 pound-feet of torque and drives the rear wheels through a Caterham six-speed gearbox, replaces the Rover unit that was fitted to the original 2002 R300. Top speed is 140 mph.The latest edition of the R300 gets chassis enhancements and evolutionary styling touches derived in part from the Superlight R500, including a standard keyless ignition system and flush button dash design. Options include a dry-sump oil system and limited-slip differential. The R300 rides on 15-inch Superlight alloy wheels shod with Avon CR500 rubber.Prices start at $39,250 in kit form and $43,975 fully assembled, for spring delivery. The less-expensive Caterham Seven Roadsport 175, powered by the same Duratec 2.0 engine, starts at $34,550 in kit form and $39,250 fully assembled.Inside Line says: Caterham continues to offer outstanding open-air entertainment. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
