Driving into post-maturity: When should you turn in the keys?
This is going to become a bigger and bigger issue as baby boomers (and their parents) move en masse into the land of the perpetual turn signal. My thinking is: Should middle-age morons be required to have their driving skills tested on a regular basis after they have done something particularly stupid? Should teenagers be required to have their driving skills tested on a regular basis based on the way they actually drive (talking on a cellphone and/or text messaging)? Hey, studies have shown that operating a vehicle and talking on a cellphone simultaneously is the equivalent of driving drunk. As for text messaging while behind the wheel, people in the throes of a grand mal seizure are more alert. Back to older drivers. Let's face it, some people are capable of driving well into older age and some aren't. Some people will recognize that they shouldn't be driving anymore, and some won't give up the car until someone pries the steering wheel from their cold, dead fingers. The key is figuring out when to turn in the keys. One indicator may be how funny you find the following joke: I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather, not yelling and screaming like the other people in his car. Seriously, what we need is a standardized set of guidelines that everyone can use for self evaluation. Ten Signs You May, Or May Not, Be Losing It: 10. You find yourself changing signal light bulbs once a week. 9. You are the focus of a neighborhood driving watch. 8. You are often followed by the emergency-personnel paparazzi. 7. You have relatives lining up to take out life insurance on you. 6. You recently got angry at someone who cut you off and gave them the thumb. 5. You own prescription night-vision goggles for driving after dark. 4. You are often tailgated by women pushing strollers. 3. You routinely take up three parking spaces at the mall. 2. You are thinking about replacing your Lincoln Town Car with something bigger. 1. You often pull into gas stations and sit there, waiting for the attendant to come out and fill the tank, check the oil and wash the windshield.
