Collector-Car Clash: Jay Leno Being Sued Over '31 Model J Duesenberg Sale

NEW YORK — Jay Leno, the Tonight Show host and comic, is well known for his oversize garage filled with collector-car gems. Now he's being sued over a 1931 Duesenberg Model J town car that he purchased at auction in 2005. Attorneys for the previous owner, now deceased, say the car was seized by a Manhattan parking garage over unpaid bills and sold without the owner's knowledge or consent. The previous owner was John Strauss, an heir to the Macy's department-store fortune, who reportedly suffered from dementia and died earlier this year. Leno's spokesman declined comment on the issue.Jay Leno has a generous number of Duesenbergs in his collection already. Beginning on November 9, the DIY Network's Celebrity Rides program will air a one-hour special on Leno's Duesenberg collection, including a Le Baron Barrelside, a Model X and a 1931 Model J418 Town Car known as the 'Lost' Duesenberg and described by Leno as the 'last original-owner unrestored Duesenberg.'Inside Line says: This one should be good for a few headlines before the inevitable quiet settlement. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
