Capac's autumn show draws nearly 1,400 cars
When Dave and Verna Shoultz bought their 1957 Bel Air four-door hardtop, it was wearing what Dave called a 'John Deere yellow' paint job.'I think the car originally was a cream color, but we had it painted dust pearl, which was a factory color,' he said. The Shoultzes found the Chevy about 16 years ago south of Lapeer, where they live. They got parts they needed from Florida and had a professional do the exterior paint. In spite of its glamorous profile, the hardtop has the standard 283-inch six with two-speed Powerglide. crank windows no power steering or brakes. The owner of a 1955 deep-pink-and-black Pontiac Star Chief convertible was spotted tooling out of town following the awards presentations. He was wearing a black cap and fifties-pink golf shirt, and stopped briefly beside the road to put up the top of the mile-long car under threatening evening clouds. The owner of a copper-colored 1958 Chevrolet two-door hardtop left his prize-winning car with the windows open and enormous trophy in full view on the back seat while he transacted some business at the McDonald's south of Capac.'Corvette was the featured car at the show this year,' said Dave Scholz. 'We had 125 pre-registered and many more than that showed up.'Scholz said the show depends on volunteers and Scholz staff who search for trophy sponsors, work on publicity, handle registrations and encourage participation. It's a year-round project.'We had 75 classes with three awards in each, plus other categories,' Scholz said. 'We spent $10,000 in advertising and must have passed out 30,000 to 40,000 fliers.'
