Motel T drivers, fans celebrate car's 100th birthday

Patrick Liebler, spokesman for the event, said Saturday marks 100 years to the day that a Model T car rolled off the line. Participants visited Ford's world headquarters and the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, the Piquette Plant in Detroit, where the Model T was made, and the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. While at Edsel Ford's 87-acre estate, the drivers had lunch and checked out each other's cars. Mike and Mary Johnston of Oxford love the design and engines of older Fords. They own Ford's 1940 convertible and 1932 Coupe. They drive both cars regularly, eschewing trailers unless going a long distance to a show. Mike Johnston said he loves his Coupe because it was the first year Ford put a V-8 engine in it. But he said the Model T is a great looking car. 'They look nice,' he said. Nearly 15 million Model T cars were produced between 1908 and 1927, Edsel House staff said. 'It is an important date,' Liebler said. 'Ford put the world on wheels.'
