John McCain, Car Buff? Candidate Reportedly Owns 13 Cars

WASHINGTON, — Senator John McCain, Republican presidential nominee, is under scrutiny this week over his family's fleet of 13 vehicles, not all of which are U.S. brand names. Newsweek magazine reports in its September 29 issue that McCain himself drives a 2004 Cadillac CTS — but there are such vehicles as a Toyota Prius, a Volkswagen convertible, and a Honda sedan in the McCain garages as well. The article contrasts McCain's multiple cars — all but the Cadillac registered in wife Cindy's name, by the way — with the single car registered to Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama and his wife. Obama's car: a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The publication says Obama traded in his previous Hemi-powered Chrysler 300C for the hybrid vehicle last year.In the McCain fleet are some interesting rides, Newsweek reports: a 2007 Ford half-ton pickup, a 1960 Willys Jeep and a 2008 Jeep Wrangler, a 2001 GMC SUV and a 2000 Lincoln. Cindy McCain's preferred vehicle is a Lexus, which is registered to her family beer-distribution business. Newsweek also said the McCain family owns three NEV Gem electric vehicles. The Prius is said to be his daughter Meghan's. McCain made news earlier this year when he was not sure whether she had purchased the hybrid Toyota herself or whether he had bought it for her.In a conference call to media, United Auto Workers president Ron Gettelfinger blasted McCain's ownership of non-U.S.-made vehicles, saying, ' 'Buy American' can't just be a slogan that John McCain rolls out when he is in Michigan. It's insulting to our members. We need a president who's committed to rebuilding the auto industry here in America, not a president who buys foreign cars and then lies about when he thinks autoworkers are watching.'What this means to you: McCain actually seems to own quite an array of American iron. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
