Honda revs up hybrid offerings
Honda will display a concept version at the Paris car show next month. It released pictures Thursday revealing a hatchback with more conventional looks than its predecessor, which limped out of the market in 2006. Its U.S. sales peaked in 2001 at just more than 4,700. By contrast, Toyota sold more than 180,000 Prius cars in the United States last year. Honda is targeting full-year sales of 200,000 Insights -- half of them in North America. Auto analysts said the new Insight seems likely to appeal to consumers. Like the popular Prius, 'it'll have unique styling so people will know at a glance what it is,' said George Peterson, president of consultancy AutoPacific Inc. in Tustin, Calif. 'It'll have five seats, and that opens it up to everyone looking for a small, fuel-efficient car.' While the first Insight was very fuel-efficient, exceeding 70 miles per gallon, it offered few amenities for mainstream drivers. 'The original Honda Insight pioneered hybrid technology in the U.S. and remains a symbol of Honda's commitment to innovative technology and fuel efficiency,' Honda CEO Takeo Fukui said in a statement. 'This new Insight will break new ground as an affordable hybrid within the reach of customers who want great fuel economy and great value,' he said. The car will feature a more cost-efficient version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology, which allows cars to run on electric-only mode up until around 25 miles per hour. The new Insight will be built at Honda's Suzuka factory in Japan, where it makes the Civic hybrid. After the launch of the Insight, Honda said it would introduce a sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z concept shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. With the new models, Honda expects global hybrid sales to rise to half a million vehicles a year. You can reach Christine Tierney at (313) 222-1463 or [email protected].
