Despite a vocal group of enthusiasts urging the revival of the El Camino nameplate, Pontiac has chosen the name G8 ST for its rear-drive sport truck. The G8 ST, which shares its platform and powertrain with the Australian-built G8 sedan, goes on sale in late 2009 as a 2010 model. After running an Internet promotion inviting the public to submit names for the vehicle, Pontiac said it got more than 18,000 suggestions. The volume of responses delayed the name announcement so Pontiac could review, and legally check out, the suggestions.The sport truck’s resemblance to the classic Chevrolet car/pickup hybrid from the 1970s and ‘80s made El Camino a popular suggested name, Pontiac said.“We actually thought very long about El Camino,” said Craig Bierley, a product marketing director for the Buick-Pontiac-GMC group. “In the end, we felt it was more appropriate to honor the El Camino’s unique place as part of Chevy’s heritage and not use that nameplate on a Pontiac.”
