Fiat will build new small engine in Poland

TURIN -- Fiat will build its new 900cc gasoline engine in Poland.

The engine will be the smallest engine in a European car and the only two-cylinder engine on offer in Europe when it goes into the Topolino, a microcar that Fiat will build in Zastava, Serbia, starting late next year.

Internally called SGE, the engine's variants will range from a 65hp normally aspirated version to a turbcharged110hp version equipped with Fiat's Multiair adjustable valve timing system.

The 65hp version will have CO2 emissions of less than 100 grams per kilometer.

The engine will later be offered in the Fiat 500 and Panda minicars and, possibly, in the entry-level models of the Grande Punto small car.

To build the engine, Fiat Powertrain Technologies will expand its plant in Bielsko Biala, in southwest Poland.

Fiat has not yet announced production volumes and investments for the engine.

Fiat considered building the engine in its Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy.

Late last year, Mirafiori workers voted against Fiat's request to increase production of the C514 manual gearbox from 15 to 17 shifts a week.

The decision led Fiat to conclude that Mirafiori is not flexible enough as a production location for the new engine.
